Evaluation Thomas Howes
At the start of this project I didn’t know what I really wanted to do and after choosing printmaking and illustration I definitely do. It has definitely made me want to go into a illustration based path, printmaking is very addictive and the screens I got throughout this project has made me go down to the print room more often. I feel happy going down there now, at the start of this project I can honestly say I put off going down the print room and to be honest it was because I was imitated buy going into a studio and not knowing how to do anything. It was a lot easier then I thought and the staff were so helpful I feel I learnt a lot during the different processes. I feel a lot more confident in the studio now and at the moment I am already setting up another screen. Its also become a lot easier when I consider other projects and what will I do. For example the collections brief where we have to make a book I’m so excited because I want to make nice looking more interactive books and I want to include screen work following a particular theme.
I think the more I go down into the print room I will defiantly want to try out lots of different ideas, its so much more refreshing to be editing pictures in a studio then sitting in a dark room with a laptop and the latest cop y of Photoshop. Its unfortunate that in this project that I only really felt like I got to grips with everything near the end. It would have been so much better if I wasn’t looking at different print methods at home first and if I just went down to a proper studio and got help and produced a better grade of work. The project also helped with my sense of colour as well because at the start I wasn’t really that confident with colour limiting myself to black and white but as the project has gone out I have naturally looked at more colourings in drawings and prints, the print studio helped a lot with this because there were so many colours to play with and you didn’t really want to be printing something that would just look the same as if you filled it out with a pen. Its was also a nice a experience to work with clients and is definitely a great experience for the future, I still hope though that I get clients in the future and because of this I am definitely trying to get my work noticed and it seems to be working, having a few bits of work shown on other people blogs and even a webzine is a great way of publicity it has defiantly made my flickr account to rise in popularity in the last few months and hopefully a few more clients will come next year.
i think though that in this project i didn’t look at enough different artists who specialize in printmaking and just seeing now a book for printmaking is really annoying because i believe it would have helped so much and i would have found it intreating to know i have however placed a order for a book for screen-printing at home. i dont think i will be printmaking at home anymore but it will be more handy to know if i can get away with simple prints made at home then that a college.
Its however very unfortunate to not have enough time for type print but I don’t see this as I have to do this now and I most likely do it in the print studio in the near future as I seem to be going down there a lot more. Throughout I have definitely seen myself play with type in a more illustration way and it is definitely help understand what looks good and what doesn’t. illustration wise I think I have become stronger im definitely trying to do things a bit differently then before trying to not just draw image and be happy with it im drawing several drawings and playing around with them a lot more until I get a great image. I think its working and my work is becoming stronger and print is such a great method to getting a point or a image across. Drawings and prints can do what photography cant and that is that it can do anything, there are no rules mistakes can be made and sometimes it helps. Making myself try to be more experimental has definaiently opened a new gap in my illustration im trying to not use as much stock photography as something to work from. Illustration and printmaking is always going to be something I will associate with because I just don’t see doing anything else as im happy with what I am doing now and I cant wait to explore more of it in the future.
Throughout this project I have played with different types of type mainly in a illustration sense but not actually looked into any type printing methods. My dad used to work a lot with type when he was younger and was helpful enough to tell a little more about newspaper printing and to also to give me some print blocks. Now to play with them in a studio.
All of them I am very happy with as I feel like I’m starting to play more with different types of media.
I have looked at different types of illustration throughout this project it had expanded now how i work it has definitely made me more comfortable using colour in my work and to definitely try out more things here are some examples of work I have created recently.
The pieces inside could actually be taking like a postcard so the consumer can use them as well. I like this idea but when it comes to making the product I had difficulty and it doesn’t seem to professional and it looks more like a prototype.
